Music, when soft voices die, vibrates in the memory. - Shelley
The Nassau Cemetery Association, a not-for-profit cemetery, was founded by the Lewis family in April of 1900. The Memorial Park area was established in the late Thirties, replicating California cemeteries that eliminated upright headstones thus making the cemeteries look more like a park.
Many of the old Port Washington "clam digger" families are buried here. Some of these families (The Baymen) were interred in the Free Church Cemetery near the Mill Pond and then moved to Nassau Knolls Cemetery during the turn of the century.
One headstone for the Hyde family is a large rock (erratic) that was found in Sands Point. In addition, the Morgan Family (two prominent headstones) helped establish several businesses in Port Washington in the early to mid- 1900's, as well as running the famous Morgan's Dock in Manorhaven.
